19(R)-Hydroxylated prostaglandins, particularly from the PGE and PGF series, are found in primate and marsupial semen. Their biological role is unclear, but 19(R)-hydroxylation in F-series PGs reduces receptor-mediated activity. These compounds are used in reproductive biology research to study prostaglandin metabolism and receptor interactions in vitro.
