Trimethoprim

SKU: orb1309588

Description

Trimethoprim (NSC-106568) is a small molecule antibacterial agent that primarily functions as a dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) inhibitor. It is widely used in research to study antibiotic mechanisms and bacterial resistance, both in vitro and in animal infection models. Additionally, it exhibits inhibitory activity against cytochrome P450 2C8 and organic cation transporter 2.

Bioactivity

In Vivo
Trimethoprim acts by interfering with the bacterial dihydrofolate reductase, inhibiting the synthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid. This inhibition causes a deficiency in nucleotides essential for bacterial DNA replication, which in some instances leads to cell death due to thymineless death.
